Akeem Jamal and the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation are Bringing Pickleball to Roosevelt Island in 2023

Akeem Jamal, a former professional basketball player, is making a difference in the Roosevelt Island community. He is the Chairman of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) and is working to make Roosevelt Island a better place to live and work.

Jamal was born in Brooklyn, New York and attended St. John’s University in Queens. After graduating, he played professional basketball in Europe and in the ABA. He eventually settled in Roosevelt Island, where he lives and works today. As Chairman of RIOC, he is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the island.

Jamal has worked to make Roosevelt Island a better place for its residents. He has worked to improve the island’s infrastructure, including the installation of new motor gate garages, electric vehicle charging stations, new walkways, and upgraded lighting. He has also worked to improve the island’s public safety by providing additional police presence.

In addition to these improvements, Jamal is also working to bring a new recreational activity to the island: pickleball. Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. It is played with a special paddle and a small plastic ball. Jamal has partnered with Shelton Haynes, a former professional tennis player, to make pickleball available to Roosevelt Island residents in 2023. This will give residents an opportunity to get involved in a new sport and increase their physical activity.

Jamal has also worked to increase the economic development of the island. He has worked to attract businesses to the island, including a new hotel and public park. He has also worked to create jobs and encourage investment in the island.
