Long before he was Managing Director at JP Morgan, Justin Nelson was studying chemistry. His academic record, a double focus in chemistry and economics from Tufts University followed by an MBA from Columbia University, might look unusual for someone who now leads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut. Nelson says that background shaped how he hires today.

“When I’m out looking to hire people, I actually couldn’t care less what your major is,” he said, a philosophy drawn directly from his own winding path into wealth management.

Science Meets Wall Street

Nelson currently oversees more than $15 billion in client assets and leads a twenty person team, a responsibility built over nearly three decades in the industry. He credits his science background with teaching him how to test assumptions and follow evidence, skills that transfer directly into financial planning for high-net-worth families.

Rather than treating his chemistry degree as an odd detour, Justin Nelson JP Morgan treats it as proof that talented people can enter finance from almost anywhere. He now actively recruits candidates from psychology, biology, and engineering programs, betting that their differing perspectives make his JP Morgan team stronger.

That bet rests on a simple belief. Half of wealth management is analytical, built on numbers and performance, while the other half depends on understanding people during emotional moments like inheritance planning or family disputes over money. Nelson’s own multidisciplinary training, he says, prepared him for both sides of that equation long before he ever managed a single client account.

Justin Nelson now leads the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team out of Connecticut, a role that keeps him close to the families he has advised for years.
