A Tufts University alumnus, Justin Nelson has played a transformative role in bridging the gap between Tufts students and
career opportunities at JP Morgan Private Bank. When Nelson, who graduated in
1998, sought an internship in the financial sector during his junior year, he
faced significant challenges. At that time, Tufts lacked a dedicated network to
connect students with finance internships, and no major financial firms were
actively recruiting on campus. 

Fortunately, Nelson’s friends in the finance industry helped him secure a web development
internship at JP Morgan in New York City. This initial opportunity eventually
led to a full-time position after he graduated with degrees in chemistry and
economics. Over the years, Nelson advanced to the role of Managing Director in
Asset Management at JP Morgan Private Bank, based in Greenwich, Connecticut. 

In 2006, Nelson began efforts to make Tufts a core recruiting school for JP Morgan’s asset
management group. His aim was to provide Tufts students with the same
opportunities he had to work hard to find. Initially, Nelson faced logistical
and financial hurdles, as he lacked the support typically given to
representatives from core schools. Despite these challenges, he persisted,
collecting résumés and meeting with an increasing number of interested students. 

Nelson’s commitment paid off in 2009 when Tufts was designated as a core school for JP Morgan’s
asset management division. Since then, approximately 20 Tufts graduates have
either interned or been hired full-time at JP Morgan, significantly enhancing
the representation of Tufts alumni at the firm. 

One notable success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who secured a summer internship at JP
Morgan during the financial crisis, thanks to Justin Nelson. Trott later transitioned into a full-time role at the company. 

Today, a robust network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan continues to support Nelson’s mission by
participating in recruiting activities and mentoring current students. Nelson’s
contributions have not only benefitted JP Morgan but also strengthened the
Tufts Financial Network, fostering a lasting connection between the university
